Burgundian tapestry

“The Coronation of a Potentate” Brussels, produced in the first third of the 16th century approx. 268 x 165 cm. As this allegorical tapestry is only fragmentary, the depiction is difficult to construe. The male figure is an early portrait of Emperor Charles V. (1500-1558). Despite the lack of heraldic evidence such as coat of arms, Golden Fleece or insignia, this is supported by the well-matching facial features and coat, throne and the weaving time of origin. A reference for the textile picture may be the tapestry of “The Statue of the Virgin Arrives in Brussels”, whose design is attributed to the Dutch painter Bernaert van Orley. The scene itself is of the coronation of a potentate whose exposed seat is distinguished by a precious fabric (silk) cloth of honour. Charles is surrounded by female figures serving him and offering fruit, such as pomegranates, and flowers. The costumes, borders and the nature of the material justify the dating of the first third of the 16th century. This excerpt was originally the central motif of a much larger tapestry and was later reduced in size for this format; hence, this scene is a very important fragment. The border exhibits opposing interlinking and hardly shows visible signs of attachment. It is a bit more finely woven than the tapestry. Due to its good chromatic coordination to the overall colour scheme, it can be perceived as belonging. The colour of the red and the many blue tones are wonderfully preserved. The surface shows many small and larger areas of damage as well as old repairs; however they only disturb the overall image a bit. (MA)
